Sound and Color
THIS, this was something I would recommend for anyone to try at least once. Sit with a single piece of music for 2 months. Record all of your thoughts and feelings about that piece, write down the images you see in your minds eye, the colors, the motions. Essentially, create a relationship to that piece that is entirely personal.
Sometimes you just need a little push to try something new, and in 2017, my dear friend Charles gave me a push. He told me about this vision he had for his Faculty Piano Recital and how he wanted a painting to go with each song he was going to play. A response in color to the music. He asked if I would take on the project and I ecstatically agreed! Overall, it was a wonderfully calming ritual and I would definitely do it again. Give myself a little more space and time. I might even try it with these same songs. Here are my color interpretations of “Estampes” by Debussy (Blue), “Jeux d’eau” by Ravel (Pink), “Trois Pièces” by Poulenc (Purple) and “Piano Sonata No. 5” by Scriabin (Yellow).
